I was so pumped when Marion at Marionberry Style announced this month’s “Trend of the Month” challenge as STRIPES!
Stripes: big, bold stripes are one of 2013’s biggest trends. Now, I’ll be honest, as someone who is very pear shaped and has very large hips – stripes have not always been my biggest, uhhhh, asset. Or I have not always been the biggest fan of stripes. Or something.
You know what I mean.
But anyway, as I’ve gone through trial and error, figuring out what works for my body type and what doesn’t, I’ve come to REALLY like stripes.
I know that, for example, with a skirt like this one, it’s better for me NOT to tuck my shirt in. The more attention I draw to my waist, the more self-conscious I am about my shape. You know? BUT, by wearing a plain tee, layered with a collared shirt OVER a skirt like this, it gives the illusion of elongating my torso – THUS, slimming my hips. PLUS, by adding a structured jacket, that still gives me the girly figure I want.
Did all of that make sense? It makes sense in my head. But I want to make sure it makes sense to you.
Anyway. If you’re like me and you’ve got those hips, try this trick! See what you think. Don’t be afraid of stripes.
Stripes are interesting and fun and can TOTALLY make an outfit go from blah to wow! 🙂
‘Naw mean?!

It did make sense. A lot of it, actually.:) I like stripes, but I’d never buy a horizontal pattern like this one. Well, maybe now, because you look great!;)

This is such a cute look on you Molly, and so unexpected to see the stripes on the skirt rather than on top! Love the sweater, and the jacket is adorable too – how cute are those ruffles on the cuffs! 🙂
thank you so much, Laura!! it’s one of my favorite jackets – it’s so old it’s even lost a button! LOL!
LOVE this outfit!
Seriously, it’s so put together and cute. That skirt is adorable, and I love your tip for slimming the hips. I’m totally using that idea.

I love this skirt! I have the same problem with my hips, so I usually steer clear of stripes. But maybe I should try this.
Anywho. I mentioned you on my blog post today and I just thought you should know that. Because I think you’re neat. And pretty.
aw thank you SO much, sarah!! that is SO sweet!! i can’t wait to read it!

You look seriously gorgeous! I love everything about this outfit!
thank you so much, emily!
I LOVE that style tip and I know about you mean about tucking the shirt into this type of skirt and it not being complimentary. You are inspiring me to REALLY want to layer because you do it so wonderfully!
thank you so much, evani! it REALLY does help!
You are seriously the best layerer I know! I’m afraid of bulk with layering but you looks slimmer!
I saw that skirt on Target clearance for weeks and just thought, “summer”. Look at you making it all season-less.
girl i know you can do it! 🙂 layering takes practice… or something. thanks, kristin!
As you know, I love this skirt! I tried my jcrew blazer just like that with mine and it looked funny 🙁 I need to figure out how to make it work like you did! Adorable! 🙂
oh girl you can TOTALLY rock it. i know it!! thanks, mel!
I have a minor stripe addiction, but it usually happens when they’re black and white (or some solid color). I love how you mixed it up here–the colors are so pretty!
thank you so much, alyssa!! i am with you – i am LOVING stripes.
Very cute! I am also wearing a brightly colored skirt! BTW- Love the description of your site!

thank you so much, yi-chia! i know, right? i love it, too!
I love this look! I would have NEVER known how to wear a striped skirt and would have definitely been too afraid of what might become of my hips. But this looks amazing and makes it totally flattering. You always make any trend so wearable for anyone!
thank you so much, charlotte!! you are always so encouraging 🙂
great outfit! I love those stripes and i’m not always the biggest fan of stripes myself!
i know, right? i think every girl is hesitant of stripes at some point 🙂
I love all the color combos and that’s a nice skirt. Love purple and nude together. My shape is the opposite of yours. I would take stripes anyday to widen my hips
thank you so much, girl.
I love this skirt. Great tip on leaving the shirt untucked. Thanks for sharing this post because I will definitely be Marionberry’s newest follower!
thank you so much, lins!! oh my goodness yes! marion is the BEST!! you’ll absolutely love her!
That skirt is adorable! And I LOVE your boots.
thank you so much, megan!
I am in love with your skirt and the way you styled it, and that’s a great tip!!!
thank you so much, niki!
Love this outfit girl. I know what you mean about learning to dress for hips…my mamma gave me hers! And she’s worked them her whole life, haha. I love your fearlessness of stripes. And That skirt is so darling. Did you get it recently?
thank you so much, elise! i actually got it on sale at Target over the summer – so sadly no 🙁 🙁 but i do love it! and yeah, i have my mama to thank for my hips, too!
I love the colors of this skirt, Molly!
thank you so much, rachel! 🙂
This is sooooo cute! I love how you made the more summery colored skirt look perfect for the season with the blazer and boots. Brights plus neutrals equals happier winter outfits in my book. And this outfit would still be really cute with a solid colored pencil skirt, but stripes really do make everything more awesome…
thank you so much, anne!! that’s just what i was going for! 🙂
i’ve seen that skirt at target before! makes me wish I owned it! such a cute outfit!
thank you so much, katie! 🙂
Cute! I loved that skirt all summer 🙂 and I love how you winterized it!
thank you so much, ashley!
Yes girl you are making those stripes work for you!!!!! Loves it 🙂

Alesha <3
thank you so much, alesha!
I love how this striped skirt isn’t your average, everyday skirt. It’s completely fabulous with the varying widths and colors of the stripes and it’s such a visually interesting garment, it really makes the whole outfit. I love how you just went with accent garments, the blue sweater and the pretty beige jacket just help to show off the skirt.
oh thank you so much, katie! i love this skirt, too!! you are so sweet!
you know what’s weird? I wore stripes more when I was pregnant than any other time!
haha that’s hilarious! i love it!
