RECIPE | Easy, Delicious & (mostly) Organic Homemade Light Ranch Dressing
To say I love ranch dressing would be an understatement. I love ranch dressing. Ranch on salads? Yes. Ranch with fries? Oh yeah. Ranch on a sandwich? Done. Ranch. Ranch. RANCHHHH.
And for years, I was very much in a state of “ignorance is bliss” when it comes to the ingredients in store bought ranch dressing. Until one day, when I learned… and basically my heart was shattered and I got a major case of “the sads” and realized how much JUNK is in store bought ranch.
I dare you to go to the grocery store and FIND a bottle of store bought ranch dressing that DOES NOT HAVE high fructose corn syrup, MSG (often disguised because it’s spelled out as Monosodium glutamate), soybean oil, and a bajillion mg of sodium.
When I realized that I was like, “NOOOOOO!!!!! NOT MY BELOVED RANCH!!!!!!!! WHYYYY?!?!?!?!”
Anyway. So. Once I stopped crying and picked myself back up by my own bootstraps, I set out to make ranch without junk. I found a BUNCH of recipes on the internet that basically just called for a packet of ranch seasoning and some liquid and I was like, “That is not homemade ranch.”
So, I played around with some ideas and ingredients and this is what I ended up making… and it is DELICIOUS. I can safely and happily say that store bought ranch is a thing of the past in this house. BOOYEAH!!
I hope you enjoy and give this recipe a try!
Organic Homemade Light Ranch Dressing
Ingredients
- 3/4 cup organic pure buttermilk
- 1 cup pure mayonnaise organic mayo is hard to find, I used "real" mayo that is non-gmo certified
- 1 cup organic PLAIN, greek yogurt
- Juice from 1 lemon pro tip: roll the lemon on the counter to "juice" it up before you cut it
- 1/4 teaspoon cracked sea salt to taste
- 2 tbsp dried parsley
- 1 tsp dried dill
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1/2 tsp dried basil
- 1/2 tsp pepper
Instructions
-
Combine all the dry ingredients in a small bowl and mix well.
-
In a separate, medium mixing bowl, combine the buttermilk, mayo, greek yogurt, and lemon juice and stir.
-
Then add in the dry ingredients and stir well.
-
You can totally use the ranch right away, but it's definitely better after it's sat for at least 20 minutes in the fridge.
-
I then put the batch in cans! It keeps for about a month (or until it starts to smell... you will be able to tell!)
-
You can totally cut the recipe in half if you don't want to waste dressing.
So what do you think? Have you made your own ranch before? Will you try this recipe? Have a recipe you like that you’d like to share with me?
There’s nothing wrong with consuming MSG. Urban legend. No data supports it being harmful.
I’m just going to have to agree to disagree with you on that one. Much like high fructose corn syrup, which the FDA “swears” is not bad for you, a whole lot of other evidence suggests otherwise. http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2009/04/21/msg-is-this-silent-killer-lurking-in-your-kitchen-cabinets.aspx
Yum!! We love ranch and having a healthier version would be fabulous! Xo, Stephanie
