Fashion for Good Friday: Mercy House Fair Trade Friday
I am always on the hunt for amazing companies or organizations that are spreading joy and kindness and dignity around the globe. Y’all know this. That’s part of the whole reason I started this whole “Fashion for Good Friday” series! I wanted to both challenge myself to find companies doing amazing things AND, in turn, share it with y’all!
I learned about Mercy House Kenya a little while ago, but only recently learned about their online shop!
What is Mercy House?
Mercy House was founded in 2010 by Kristen Welch of We Are That Family (if you don’t know her, GO READ HER. She’s awesome!). Kristen and her family founded the house after traveling to Kenya with Compassion International.
Here’s a video that shares more of her story:
Mercy House exists to engage, empower, and disciple women around the globe in Jesus’ name. They seek to empower women and teenage mothers around the world through partnerships and sustainable fair trade product development.
Their flagship ministry in Kenya is a house called “Rehema House” that takes in vulnerable teenage pregnant girls, most of whom have suffered severe oppression and sexual violence. They receive safe prenatal and medical care, counseling, education, life and sustainable job skills in Jesus’ name with the goal of reintegrating the mother and her child back home or into a safe, supported environment.
Did You Know?
- 60% of those living in extreme poverty are women
- A leading cause of death for girls ages 15-17 is childbirth
- 1 in 7 girls will marry before they are 15 in the developing world
- 1 out of 3 women is beaten, coerced into sex, or abused in her lifetime
- A woman who earns an income reinvests 90% of it back into her family
- A girl who completes basic education is 3 times less likely to contract HIV/AIDS
Fair Trade Friday Club
Mercy House launched the Fair Trade Friday Club which enabled them to work with artisans in over 16 countries around the globe. Mercy House believes in “redeemed consumerism” and providing dignified jobs and opportunities to women in impoverished nations and communities.
Fair Trade Friday is a monthly membership club that delivers beautiful, handmade fair trade items every month! There’s the Fair Trade Club that sends a variety of 3-4 items, the Earring of the Month club for you ladies who love gorgeous earrings, and the Bracelet of the Month club where you receive a trendy handmade bracelet each month.
They have a TON of different items and options (from home baskets, to kids baskets, to jewelry, to decor) in their shop (go check them out!!)… But for my first time, I opted to just check out the ORIGINAL Fair Trade Friday gift box.
Here’s what came in my Fair Trade Friday (The Original) Gift Box:
{3 Cords} Zipper Pleated Clutch / Pouch – Handmade in Haiti – $16 retail value
This pouch is absolutely beautiful and I love the style! It’s the perfect pouch to use in a larger diaper bag or tote bag to organize smaller items… and you can throw your phone, keys, wallet, etc. into it and use it as a grab-and-go bag, too!
ViBella Jewelry – Silver Necklace – Handmade in Haiti – $15 retail value
This necklace is such a beautiful, simple dainty necklace. I love the hammered detail on the bar! It’s the perfect necklace for layering with other jewelry or wearing alone. Great for year round, too!
Zambian Soap Company – Spearmint Soap – $4 retail value
This bar soap smells amazing! It’s such an invigorating scent and would be perfect to use in the morning to help wake up!
No. 41 – Friendship Bracelet – $15 retail value
Such a gorgeous leather wrap bracelet. Super trendy, but the great neutral brown color make it easy to wear with anything!
A little $5 off promo code for you if you’re interested in trying out a Fair Trade Friday box! CODE: “4HOPE”
I am absolutely in LOVE with this box! I thought it was an AMAZING deal for all that I got and now I’m just excited to try out all the other gift boxes and products they have in their shop. 🙂
Mercy House is making a HUGE impact on women in so many communities around the globe.
Be sure to check them out and support women all over the globe who are working to care for themselves and their families!
What about you? Have you heard of Mercy House?
Molly you always impress me with your dedication to giving back to others and making a difference in our world. I love the concept of this box and who it benefits. I have to admit that I am very shocked by some of the statistics you shared with us. It makes me definitely think of how I can help and make a difference to these girls as well.
