A couple of weeks ago, my dear friend Emily sent out a newsletter sharing how she is cultivating an attitude of gratitude this year… She said that she, along with two friends, have made a pact to text each other every night two things that they are grateful for that day. She kept saying how it has made such a huge impact on her feeling grateful for the big and small things. I loved the idea so much, I texted a couple of friends and asked if they, too, would be my attitude of gratitude buddies and I was so grateful (no pun intended) they said yes!
So every night, we text each other two things we are grateful for that day. It might be a small thing or maybe it’s a big thing… but it’s gotten me into the frame of mind of being grateful each and every day. It’s even gotten me and my husband talking about the little things we are grateful for each day.
It’s not that I wasn’t grateful before (I was!), but I don’t know how often I just stopped to be consciously THANKFUL each day. In just a couple of weeks of doing this, I’ve felt the ripple effects in other areas of my life. I’m actively looking for things throughout the day to be grateful for – the sound of my children giggling, a great lunch with friends, a car that runs (and has working air conditioning! This one seems silly, but my car last summer didn’t have working AC and in North Carolina, that means misery…), a comfy bed, the way I feel in a new sweater, a good hair day, a smile from a stranger, so on and so on and so on.
Why am I sharing this with you? Well, my hope is that you will also start to do this. My friend Emily inspired me, and I hope that this inspires you to cultivate your own attitude of gratitude. The world needs more people who are taking the time to be grateful. The world needs more people who are taking the time to feel content and feel grateful each and every day. There’s so much darkness in this world, that if we aren’t careful, that darkness can drown out the LIGHT. There is so much beauty and so much light all around us… we just have to look for it. We just have to open our eyes to what is right in front of us. No, I don’t mean that to sound too woo woo or anything like that… I genuinely feel that when more of us take the time to be grateful, our families and our communities are better for it.
SO tell me… what are you grateful for? Leave a comment with something big or small that you are GRATEFUL for today. And let me know if you’re going to accept the attitude of gratitude challenge! Text your friends… ask them to join you!
I totally agree with this, Molly. Taking time to be grateful even for the simple, seemingly mundane things (hello a soft sweater?!) really make a HUGE impact on our own outlook and attitude, but also those around us.
On a totally separate note, we were without AC for a month in June when I was 20-24 weeks pregnant back in 2015. If it wasn’t for a kind neighbor with a window unit for us to borrow, I might have just melted – so I totally understand about the AC in the car!
love the color of your sweater!
Thanks for the inspiration! I just started a little gratitude text group with a bunch of my favorite girlfriends. Gratitude increases happiness!
I’m grateful for the beautiful fall colors against the bright blue sky we had yesterday, and waking up to the first snow of the season today.
