The Best Natural & Nontoxic Deodorants
About two and a half years ago, I made the switch to natural and nontoxic deodorant. It was one of the last things for me to make the switch to clean and nontoxic bath, body, and beauty (other than clean and nontoxic perfume). I was really afraid that I would become a sweaty stinky mess. So, over the past two and a half years, I have tested A LOT of natural and nontoxic deodorant brands.
I get questions about what I use, so I thought it would be helpful for me to share my four favorite natural and nontoxic deodorant brands. I’m sharing why I like them, favorite scents, and where you can buy them! For a couple, I’m even sharing my “Pro Tips” for getting the most effective use out of your deodorants.
Now, heads up… if you are making the switch from conventional deodorant to nontoxic deodorant, there is a detox process. This process is important. Over time, the pores in your armpits will clog when you use deodorants that contain aluminum… in order to unclog your pores, I HIGHLY recommend doing an “armpit detox.” This is vital in making sure that your deodorant can be as effective as possible.
Additionally, don’t switch back and forth between conventional and natural deodorant. Make the switch and commit.
Also, you will sweat. Sweating is natural. BUT, here’s what I have found… I actually sweat LESS now under my arms than I did before I switched. I know other people have experienced that, too. I didn’t stop sweating completely, but I definitely sweat less.
And no, I don’t stink. If I apply the deodorant as recommended, I smell great (or don’t smell at all, which is good!)
I hope those tips are helpful… now, here are four of my favorite natural and nontoxic deodorants:
Primally Pure
I have been using Primally Pure for almost a year now. I have tried their Geranium and Charcoal deodorants. My personal favorite is the Charcoal because I feel like it really does last, a little goes a long way, it smells great, and it doesn’t irritate my armpits. I just ordered the Blue Tansy deodorant to try so I’m excited!
PRO TIP: Shave your armpits at night and apply the deodorant first thing in the morning. Don’t apply the deodorant right before you put your shirt on… apply it and wait a few minutes for it to absorb. Also, a little really does go a long way. One swipe, a couple of dabs… don’t apply a lot!
PRICE: $14-$22

Native
Native has a lot of amazing scents and I love how smoothly it glides on. I really do love it and love that they have a Sensitive Collection without baking soda.
Baking soda is usually the irritant in natural deodorants that some people react to, so if you have trouble with that, just get a sans baking soda formula.
Native comes out with different scents around the holidays so that’s fun. My personal favorite scent is Lavender Rose!
PRICE: $10-$12 (sample packs available, too!)
Where to buy: Native Website, Target.com
Schmidt’s
The Schmidt’s Rose Vanilla is actually what got me into loving natural deodorant. It was the first brand I switched to and I will always love it.
Now, in full disclosure, I don’t use it anymore because this formula does irritate my sensitive skin, but I have EXTREMELY sensitive skin. It didn’t irritate it for a long time for me… probably after a year of using it. But man, the scent is amazing, the formula is amazing, it lasts so long… so if you don’t have a baking soda sensitivity, you’ll LOVE the Schmidt’s natural deodorant.
They also have tub formulas, different scents, trial sizes, and sensitive formulas!
PRO TIP: Hold the deodorant under your armpit for 10-15 seconds to “warm” up the deodorant and it will glide on SO much easier.
PRICE: $4.69-$8.99
Where to buy: Target.com, Be Pure Beauty
Meow Meow Tweet
I haven’t tried anything from the Meow Meow Tweet deodorants EXCEPT for the Grapefruit Baking Soda Free deodorant in a tub. This is different since you apply it with your fingers but, like the other natural deodorants on this list, a little goes a long way.
It smells really amazing and is great for if you have sensitive skin. I also will use this if I find that another natural deodorant is irritating me – I’ll stop and use this one for a few days and allow my arm pits to “breathe” – haha. 🙂 The downside to this one is that you do need to apply probably twice in a day if you’re really a sweaty or stinky person. But that doesn’t bother me.
PRICE: $13.99
Where to buy: Target, Credo Beauty
