Every night when I am putting my kids to bed, I do the same routine with them… and as each of them are laying in their beds, I stop, hold their hands, look them in the eyes, and I speak words of affirmation over them. Words like, “You are smart.” “You are kind.” “You are diligent.” “You are capable.” “You are strong.” “You are brave.”
I make them repeat each phrase back to me. Sometimes they roll their eyes (already?! I know. I know.) But other times, their eyes light up and they smile as they repeat these words after me.
Words are powerful. Words carry so much weight and meaning. And even after I feel like I’ve completely blown it as a mom that day, and when I feel like I am at the end of my rope, and I feel like I can’t wait another minute until my kids are in bed… I STILL take the time to speak these words over time.
Sometimes the words are really for me.
Maybe that sounds selfish? I don’t know. It’s important, though.
I think because often times, those words really are ones I need to hear myself. I need to remind myself that I am strong, smart, capable, brave, kind, and diligent. We are so hard on ourselves and we often speak so terribly to ourselves that we forget who we are and we forget who God sees us as.
What words do you need to speak over yourself? What words of affirmation do you need to be reminded of today?
