If there’s one thing I love about fashion, it’s trying something new. I love stepping outside of my comfort zone and trying a style that I wouldn’t have thought to try before or mixing prints or accessorizing. I also love learning about trends that are classic or popular in other cultures! I think fashion can be such an awesome way to connect cultures and communities. I have always admired people who can pull off any style and it hasn’t been until recently that I’ve felt brave enough to try something that’s not in my normal wheelhouse. I love these side-swept dhoti pants from MATTER Prints – they are so unique, so comfortable, and ethically made. Now, dhoti pants are a style of pants that originated in India, Nepal, and Bangladesh. Ā MATTER took this classic piece of clothing and gave it modern tailoring and they’ve produced some gorgeous, classic dhoti pants that tell a story.
If you have not had a chance already, be sure to listen to my podcast episode with Renyung Ho, founder of MATTER Prints, I loved hearing her story of how she got into the industry, how she started MATTER prints, and so much more. But what I loved most about talking with Renyung was hearing about the intention, purpose, and effort that goes into every single garment made by MATTER.
So the key with the dhoti pants is balance. Since the pants are baggy and loose, you want something to be more form fitting at the top. A tucked in t-shirt, a tank top, or even a more form-fitting blouse can really give you shape up on the top, while the dhoti pants are looser on bottom. These dhoti pants can be tied a bunch of different ways. I like tying them in the back, but a lot of women like to tie them in the front or on the side. It’s fun to play around with a variety of styles!
I also love cuffing my dhoti pants at the bottom and wearing them with wedges or sandals makes them feel a lot more casual or dressy, depending on the occasion. And let me tell you… these pants are so comfortable. It’s not even fair to other pants. I basically feel like I’m wearing fancy pajamas.
Ultimately, I think it’s important to push ourselves to try new things, learn about different styles from other cultures, and again, ask how are our clothes made… MATTER does such an amazing job making sure everyone within their supply chain is paid a fair wage, treated with dignity, and given opportunity. They produce an amazing and unique product that tells a story.
What about you? Have you heard of dhoti pants? Are you brave when it comes to trying new styles? What have you learned about other cultures through fashion?
Those pants are so fun and your makeup looks great!
